Get Help For Your Depression By Visiting Your Primary Physician

by Claire Ward

Suffering from depression and anxiety is not something you should be ashamed or embarrassed about. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, over 40 million Americans suffer from some type of anxiety disorder. Getting help for this problem is something you should consider, and your first step towards finding relief should be a visit to a primary doctor at a medical clinic.

The Initial Consultation

During your initial visit with your doctor, you should explain how you have been feeling. Depression can often leave a person feeling hopeless and sad, and it can rob a person of motivation, happiness, and satisfaction in life. In severe cases, it can even cause a person to have suicidal thoughts.

After explaining how you feel, your doctor is likely to do several different things to help you with this problem. Each of these steps will help the doctor determine how to treat your condition, and once you are treated you may begin to feel some relief from this problem.

Tests the Doctor May Use

There are a number of things your doctor might want to do to help find the right treatment for you, and the first step often involves a question and answer evaluation. During this, the doctor might ask you the following questions:

  • How often do you feel depressed?
  • Are you losing sleep because of this?
  • Do you ever have suicidal feelings?
  • Do you feel like you have lost interest in things you once enjoyed?
  • Are you having trouble feeling motivated to get things done?

Your doctor will also ask you how long you have had these feelings, and he or she may then want to run some tests. The two main tests the doctor may require are a urine test and a blood test.

Through these tests, the doctor will be able to see if your body is operating properly. One thing a blood test can reveal is whether your thyroid is working. Thyroid problems are one of the most common reasons people suffer from depression. If the blood test reveals a thyroid problem, your doctor will look into treatment options for it. If your tests do not reveal any physical problems, the doctor is likely to give you medication to treat your anxiety and depression.

Treatment Options

If an underlying physical condition is causing your problems, it must be treated first. Once it is treated, you might begin feeling better. Your doctor can also prescribe you medication to help treat the problems you are having, and antidepressants are the most common type used for this purpose.

There are dozens of different types of antidepressants available and finding the right one often takes time. You might have to try several types before you find one that works well for you. In some cases, doctors will prescribe benzodiazepines to treat anxiety problems. These medications are habit-forming though, and doctors can sometimes be reluctant to offer these unless he or she really believes they are necessary.

Doctors also may recommend therapy, such as counseling services. Visiting a counselor or psychologist on a regular basis can also help you through your depression. When you seek this type of help, you will have someone to talk to about the way you feel. You can be completely honest because the visits are confidential, and you may feel better simply by talking about the way you feel.

Depression is quite common today, but there is no reason you have to live with these feelings. Your doctor can help you through this hard time in life, but you must take the first step by making an appointment with your primary physician.
