Injuries On The Court: Common College Basketball Injuries And Treatments

Considering college basketball season is quickly approaching, you may be getting ready to watch your favorite players trample the court. College basketball is an exciting sport, but it can become a dangerous one for many players. Injured Knees

A large portion of college basketball players will injure one or both knees during practice, regular games, or tournaments. These injuries stem from the constant, stressful motions on the knees when twisting, turning, and stomping up and down the basketball court.

  • Rest – The player must stop playing, even if they are in the middle of an important game or tournament, and rest the ankle. Walking or placing weight on the leg with the sprained ankle is not recommended.
  • Ice – Placing an ice pack on the sprained ankle will reduce swelling and inflammation, but it can also numb the pain. Players should rest the ice pack on the ankle about 20 minutes.
  • Compression – In most cases, the team doctor will wrap the sprained ankle in an elastic bandage to reduce swelling, but this will also stabilize the ankle to prevent future damage.
  • Elevation – While resting, the player will elevate the leg to reduce inflammation and swelling.

If a player has a more severe sprain, further treatment and physical therapy may be necessary before they are cleared to play.

Back Injuries

The game of basketball places a great deal of stress on the back, too. Running, twisting, jumping, and the periodic contact with other players affects the upper and lower regions of a player's back, causing chronic discomfort over time. In addition, this constant stress may permanently damage a player's back, so periodic care is essential to avoid future issues.

If a player is dealing with chronic aches and pains in their back, the team doctor may recommend a series of treatments to reduce discomfort.

Hydrotherapy, or the use of various forms of hot or cold water to ease discomfort, is a common option since it does not require harmful medications or surgical procedures. Team doctors may suggest warm compresses, soaking in a jetted tub, or icing an uncomfortable region of their back to find relief.

Injuries to a basketball player's knees, ankles, and back are common, but they do not need to become permanent health issues for college athletes.
