Your periodontist may recommend that you undergo surgical gum grafting. Gum grafting is done by your periodontist who takes tissue from your palate or another area of your mouth to perform gum grafting. If that's not a feasible site to obtain the grafting from, then the tissue can be obtained from a tissue bank instead. The tissue is used to cover the exposed tooth or teeth areas, and the procedure is performed after placing you under a local anesthetic.
Following this surgery, you can actually resume your normal activities the following day. However, you might experience pain and discomfort for approximately one week, particularly if the graft source was from your palate or from another gum tissue. It's best that you exclude the chewing of hard foods or chewy foods as the grafting heals. Remember that you must not brush near the surgical site while healing is taking place.
When your gums recede and deteriorate so badly that the bone is destroyed, your periodontist can use regeneration therapy to restore both bone loss and gum tissue. This is achieved by surgically opening up the affected treatment site and moving back your gum tissue. A deep cleaning is executed to remove bacteria that's below your gum line. The periodontist then places a protein matrix on your tooth or root. That matrix protein facilitates the growth of new bone and new tissue attachment around the impacted area. The protein also serves to support and anchor your teeth. Your periodontist then flips the gum tissue back in place and stitches it when your treatment is completed.
